There’s something truly magical about a solar eclipse. Watching the moon slide gracefully in front of the sun offers a rare, awe-inspiring glimpse into the mechanics of our solar system.
As eye care professionals, we love celestial events just as much as anyone else! However, every time an eclipse approaches, our clinic phones start ringing with the same anxious question: “How can I actually watch this without ruining my eyes?”
The short answer? Indirect viewing. Let's dive into why direct viewing is so risky, what actually happens to your eyes, and how you can enjoy the show safely without missing a beat.
The Hidden Danger: What Happens When You Look Directly at the Sun?
It’s natural to think, "If the moon is covering most of the sun, isn't it safe to take a quick peek?" Unfortunately, no. In fact, partial eclipses can be even more deceptive. Because the sun is partially blocked, the ambient light dims, which prevents your natural blink reflex from kicking in as strongly. But the remaining sunlight is still just as intense.
Solar Retinopathy: A Sunburn on Your Vision
When you look directly at the sun—even for just a few seconds—the eye’s lens acts like a magnifying glass, focusing intense ultraviolet and infrared radiation directly onto the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye).
This causes a condition known as solar retinopathy.
Here is what makes solar retinopathy particularly dangerous:
It’s painless: The retina has no pain receptors. You won't feel your eye burning while it's happening.
The damage isn't instant: Visual symptoms usually don't show up until 4 to 12 hours after the damage has occurred.
It can cause permanent blind spots: Victims often wake up the next day with a dark or blurry spot right in the centre of their field of vision (a central scotoma), distorted colours, or permanent visual loss. While some people partially recover over several months, others face lifelong visual impairment.
A Quick Mythbuster: Regular sunglasses, polaroids, smoked glass, and camera lenses do NOT offer enough protection. Never use them to look directly at the sun!
Safe & Creative Ways to Watch: Indirect Viewing Methods
The absolute safest way to experience a solar eclipse is through indirect viewing. Instead of looking at the sun, you look at a projected image of the sun. It’s safe, fun, and completely stress-free.
Here are three fantastic ways to do it:
1. The Classic Cereal Box Pinhole Projector
This is a fun weekend project for families and DIY enthusiasts alike!

What you need: A cardboard box (like a cereal box), a small piece of aluminium foil, a pin, tape, and a piece of white paper.
How to make it: 1. Cut two openings at the bottom of the cereal box. 2. Tape a piece of plain white paper inside the bottom of the box on one side—this is your viewing screen. 3. Cover the top-left opening with aluminium foil and poke a tiny hole in the centre with a pin. Leave the top-right opening open to look through.
How to use it: Stand with the sun behind you. Look through the open hole in the top of the box. You’ll see a crisp, tiny projection of the eclipsed sun resting safely on the white paper inside!
2. Nature’s Projector: Tree Leaves
If you happen to be near leafy trees during a partial eclipse, look down at the ground!
The tiny gaps between overlapping leaves act as natural pinhole cameras. During an eclipse, the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy onto the sidewalk will transform into hundreds of tiny crescent shapes mirroring the sun's phase. It is one of the most serene and beautiful ways to witness the event.
3. Kitchen Colander Magic

Want the easiest trick in the book? Grab a standard kitchen colander or a slotted spoon from your pantry.
Stand with your back to the sun and hold the colander over a sheet of white cardboard or even the pavement. Each hole in the colander will project a perfect mini-eclipse onto the surface below!
What If You Really Want to Look Up?
If you prefer to look directly toward the sky, standard rules do not apply. You must use certified Solar Eclipse Glasses or a handheld solar viewer.
Before putting them on, make sure they meet these strict requirements:
ISO 12312-2 Certified: Check for this international safety standard printed on the frame or wrapper.
Unblemished lenses: Inspect them closely before use. If the filters are scratched, punctured, wrinkled, or torn, throw them away immediately.
Proper Usage: Always put your eclipse glasses on before looking up at the sun, and look away before taking them off.
